The Chicago Bulls remain in a state of NBA limbo, but a major trade with the Los Angeles Lakers could offer them a way out.
Despite some progress towards a new phase, the Bulls are still encumbered by Zach LaVine’s substantial contract, which has proven difficult to move. However, with LaVine reportedly healthy this summer, Chicago is likely to keep pursuing a trade for the two-time All-Star. LaVine, who is in his athletic prime, doesn’t fit the Bulls’ rebuilding plan but could significantly benefit a playoff contender.
The Los Angeles Lakers, who need to alleviate some of the pressure on an aging LeBron James and injury-prone Anthony Davis, could be a potential suitor. If the Lakers can acquire LaVine without trading Austin Reaves, they might view the deal as a success.
A feasible trade involves sending D’Angelo Russell, Rui Hachimura, and Gabe Vincent to Chicago for LaVine, with the salaries aligning for both teams. The Bulls would effectively convert LaVine’s large contract into three smaller, more manageable ones, with only the longest extending into the next two seasons. While Russell doesn’t fit the Bulls’ guard-heavy roster, he is on an expiring contract. Hachimura and Vincent would offer veteran leadership to support the development of Chicago’s young players.
For the Lakers, a lineup featuring James, Davis, Reaves, and LaVine could be highly effective, assuming health for all.
This potential trade could benefit both teams, helping Los Angeles and Chicago advance their respective goals.
