The Atlanta Braves bullpen secured a 5-4 victory over the Miami Marlins on Sunday, winning the series two out of three games as they head back to Atlanta.
The bullpen pitched a total of five innings, with Dylan Lee allowing two runs in the fifth. However, the subsequent four relievers kept the Marlins scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Closer Raisel Iglesias threw two scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and no walks, bringing his ERA down to 1.78. He emphasized the importance of the game, saying, “For me, it feels like we’re already playing in the postseason. We knew how crucial these games were.”
With setup man Joe Jimenez unavailable, Iglesias stepped up to earn his 32nd save of the season.
“He’s having an unbelievable year,” Braves manager Brian Snitker noted. “That’s significant because we were down Joe. We just needed to get through the seventh and then hand it over to him.”
Getting through the seventh wasn’t easy, though; it required a standout performance from Daysbel Hernandez. He came in with one out and the bases loaded after Aaron Bummer allowed two singles and a sacrifice bunt in just a third of an inning.
“With Daysbel coming in, we were looking for power and a strikeout,” Snitker said.
Hernandez delivered, striking out the first batter he faced and then inducing a lineout to escape the bases-loaded situation.
Since the bullpen faltered in a 6-5 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday, allowing a 5-1 lead to slip away, they have been remarkably consistent. Over the last 18 innings pitched, they’ve allowed only three earned runs, resulting in a 1.50 ERA during that stretch.
