The Houston Astros have increased their spending in recent years but remain willing to part ways with homegrown stars. In 2021, they bid farewell to longtime leadoff hitter George Springer, and the following offseason, they let star shortstop Carlos Correa leave. Now, a third key player in Houston’s recent success could be on the move in 2025.
Alex Bregman, the two-time All-Star and a cornerstone of the Astros’ lineup, is set to hit free agency at 30. It’s unclear if Houston will prioritize re-signing him given their rising payroll.
However, Bregman’s longtime teammate, Jose Altuve, is confident he’ll stay. Speaking to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, Altuve said, “I don’t see any chances of him leaving. That might just be me, but I really believe our front office, GM, and ownership will get a deal done for him. We’re not only a better team with him but a better organization, so it needs to happen.”
Despite Bregman’s importance, his performance has dipped in 2024, with a career-low .312 on-base percentage and a 112 OPS+. However, he’s improved in the second half of the season and continues to play strong defense at third base.
According to Spotrac, Bregman’s market value is estimated at around $29 million annually, which could result in a six- or seven-year contract worth $200-210 million. The decision to re-sign Bregman will also impact the future, with Kyle Tucker and Framber Valdez eligible for extensions, and the Astros already carrying MLB’s third-highest payroll.
