After South Carolina’s starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers suffered an ankle injury late in the game against LSU, backup Robby Ashford stepped in and played nearly the entire second half, aside from one drive when Sellers attempted to return. Sellers’ ankle has been a key focus throughout the week as the team assessed whether he would start against Akron, but the decision is now clear.
Robby Ashford will make his first start for the Gamecocks on Saturday night, giving Sellers additional time to recover. Ashford has played in two games this season, completing 3 of 5 passes for 49 yards and rushing for 37 yards.
With Akron’s defense struggling against the run, the Gamecocks’ strong ground game, led by Rocket Sanders and Ashford’s mobility, could be a key advantage.
While Sellers’ injury doesn’t appear to be serious enough to sideline him beyond this game, the upcoming bye week provides an ideal opportunity for the young quarterback to fully recover. South Carolina will face Akron on Saturday night at 7:30 pm (ET) on ESPNU.
