Philadelphia Phillies All-Star Bryce Harper exited Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays after being struck on the left elbow by a pitch.
The incident took place during the first inning with the Phillies holding a 1-0 lead. Blue Jays starter Bowden Francis delivered a 93 mph fastball inside that hit Harper’s elbow. Harper immediately dropped his bat and grabbed his elbow in discomfort.
Despite the injury, Harper stayed in the game long enough to take first base but did not return to bat. Edmundo Sosa pinch-hit for him in the third inning.
The Phillies’ radio broadcast later confirmed Harper had suffered an elbow contusion, according to the team. After the game, Harper reassured reporters, saying he felt “fine” and didn’t expect to miss any time.
“I’m not sure how much better I’d feel after one or two days off,” Harper said. “You know what I mean? I think I’d feel the same whether I rest or not.”
An eight-time All-Star and two-time NL MVP, Harper missed parts of the 2022 and 2023 seasons following Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Since returning, he has been in All-Star form, entering Wednesday’s game with a .282/.371/.521 slash line, 26 home runs, and 76 RBI in 122 games.
The Phillies, who are 82-56 and have a seven-game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East, view Harper as crucial to their championship aspirations this fall.
