The Houston Astros begin their playoff journey in the Wild Card round against the Detroit Tigers, facing their former manager A.J. Hinch. While the Astros didn’t dominate the regular season as they have in the past, all it takes is a strong month for them to make a push for their third World Series title.

Their focus is on another championship run, but once the season ends, the organization will have significant decisions to make regarding free agency. Key players like Alex Bregman and Justin Verlander are set to enter the market, presenting tough choices for the front office. Bregman, still in his prime, would be difficult to replace, making it more likely the team will try to extend his contract. On the other hand, Verlander’s age, declining performance, and injuries suggest that he may be playing for a new team next season. Still, his contributions to Houston cannot be overlooked, as he posted an impressive 7-3 record with a 3.31 ERA last season, lowering it to 2.95 in the playoffs.

If Verlander leaves, the Astros will need to find a replacement, and they may turn to St. Louis Cardinals ace Sonny Gray. Rumors suggest that the Cardinals could trade Gray, as the team undergoes changes in their front office leadership. Gray, who signed a three-year, $75 million contract, has two years remaining on his deal, but his salary might be a challenge for Houston, considering their payroll limits.

Although the Astros expect Luis Garcia and Lance McCullers Jr. to return next season, their rotation still needs a top-level pitcher. With several starters like Cristian Javier, Jose Urquidy, and J.P. France recovering from surgeries, adding Gray could provide stability. Gray’s 2024 season wasn’t headline-worthy, but his 13-9 record with a 3.84 ERA makes him a valuable option for Houston as they look to solidify their pitching staff.
