New details regarding Teresa Weatherspoon’s dismissal provide insight into Angel Reese’s heartfelt tribute.
New information about the firing of former Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon offers fresh perspective on Angel Reese’s emotional farewell.
Weatherspoon was let go last month after finishing her first season with a disappointing 13-27 record. The Sky also missed the WNBA playoffs for the first time since 2018.
Annie Costabile of the Chicago Sun-Times provides additional context on the reasons behind Weatherspoon’s dismissal, two weeks after her firing.
The report indicates that the 58-year-old coach had difficulties in keeping the Sky “schematically prepared” and did not utilize rookie Kamilla Cardoso effectively in the offense.
One of Weatherspoon’s most significant mistakes was her reported favoritism towards certain players. Sources from the league indicate that the former WNBA player “lost the locker room due to a culture that prioritized the needs of a select few.”
Weatherspoon’s exit was particularly difficult for many players, especially Reese. The 22-year-old expressed her feelings on social media in a heartfelt tribute, leading to speculation that it hinted at special treatment from her former coach.
“I’m heartbroken,” she wrote. “I’m truly at a loss for words about what this woman meant to me during such a crucial time in my life. She was the only one who believed in me and trusted me. Many don’t understand what it’s like to be a Black woman in sports when you’re not given any support.
“You faced a tough situation. Despite the many challenges we encountered this year, you always had faith. I came to Chicago because of YOU. You were an unsung hero in my life.”
“We formed a lasting bond in a short time. I never question why God brings certain people into my life and then takes them away when I need them, but I believe everyone comes into your life for a purpose and a period.
“You were the best part of that purpose and time. You didn’t deserve this, but I can’t thank you enough. I love you, Tspoon.”
In a later interview with the Sun-Times, Reese shared that she couldn’t picture a future with the Sky without Weatherspoon, saying, “I can’t imagine playing for the Sky without [Spoon]. She was the main reason I wanted to come here.”
Following Reese’s statement, Sky GM Jeff Pagliocca noted that tensions have settled and that Reese is happy in Chicago. “The relationship between the franchise and Angel is in a good place,” he stated.
“Emotions were running high for a few days, and we can respect that. We understand the strong connections that develop between coaches and players, especially among younger athletes.
“We’re in a good position now. Discussions are ongoing, and things have calmed down, but I get it. Emotions are a natural part of this when there’s a genuine friendship involved.”
