Are the Green Bay Packers currently a legitimate Super Bowl contender?
The answer seems uncertain. After winning their last two games, the Packers have reestablished themselves as strong competitors in the NFC playoff race. However, they still lack a signature victory this season, having lost twice to top NFC teams.
With limited options for roster changes this season, aside from the upcoming trade deadline, their performance in the remaining games will significantly influence how much they choose to revamp the roster in the future.
One concern for the Packers is their interior offensive line, especially at center, where fourth-year starter Josh Myers hasn’t shown he deserves a long-term extension. This could prompt Green Bay to make a significant move at the center position this spring.
Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department identified center as the Packers’ “biggest weakness” and predicted they would sign four-time Pro Bowler Ryan Kelly from the Indianapolis Colts as a free agent.
“Josh Myers has been below average this season, and his contract is nearing expiration. This makes it unlikely he’ll return as the starting center in Green Bay next fall,” the authors stated.
“Meanwhile, Kelly is set to enter free agency and is still performing at a high level. Though he missed Weeks 4 and 5 due to injury, the nine-year veteran had allowed only three pressures and earned a solid 68.2 run-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus in the Colts’ first three games.”
At 31, Kelly may not have a long-term future in Green Bay if he signs, but he performed at a Pro Bowl level in 2023 and would significantly enhance the Packers’ offensive line in the short term.
If winning a championship during Jordan Love’s extension is the Packers’ goal, securing the right center for him is essential. Kelly could be the best available option at that position this spring, making it a sensible pursuit.
