Nazem Kadri Criticizes Mike Babcock’s Coaching Behavior, Cites It as Reason for Leaving Toronto Maple Leafs

Former Toronto Maple Leafs center Nazem Kadri has opened up about his experiences under former head coach Mike Babcock, stating that Babcock’s behavior played a significant role in his decision to leave the team. Kadri, who was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in 2019, reflected on his time in Toronto during a recent interview.

Kadri expressed frustration with Babcock’s coaching style, particularly his handling of player relationships. “There was a disconnect,” Kadri said. “It felt like certain players were treated differently, and that kind of environment can be toxic.” He described instances where he felt undermined and questioned by Babcock, which affected his confidence on the ice.

Babcock, who coached the Leafs from 2015 to 2019, is known for his demanding nature and high expectations. However, Kadri’s comments highlight a growing sentiment among some players regarding the coach’s approach. “You want a coach who supports you and helps you grow, not one who makes you feel like you’re walking on eggshells,” Kadri added.

The tension came to a head during Kadri’s tenure, culminating in a series of playoff suspensions that left him feeling targeted. “I couldn’t help but feel like I was being scapegoated for the team’s failures,” he remarked. This sense of being unfairly judged contributed to his desire to move on and find a more positive environment.

Since joining the Avalanche, Kadri has flourished, playing a key role in their 2022 Stanley Cup victory. He credits the supportive culture in Colorado for allowing him to thrive both personally and professionally.

Kadri’s candid comments about Babcock offer a glimpse into the complex dynamics that can exist between players and coaches in professional sports. As he reflects on his past, it’s clear that the experience has shaped his approach to the game and his expectations for leadership moving forward.
