Defenceman Jani Hakanpää and forward Connor Dewar are edging closer to making an impact with the Toronto Maple Leafs this season. The Leafs announced on Friday that they have assigned the duo to the AHL Marlies on a conditioning loan under long-term injured reserve (LTIR).
This type of loan can last up to six days or three games.
Hakanpää has been out due to a knee injury, and Dewar is dealing with a shoulder injury. This loan also provides the Leafs additional time to address their salary cap issues.
This past summer, the Leafs signed Hakanpää to a one-year deal worth $1.47 million, while Dewar was re-signed for one year at $1.18 million.
The Marlies will play the Columbus Blue Jackets’ AHL affiliate in Cleveland on Saturday and won’t have another game until November 9.
