The Indianapolis Colts seemed poised to take control of Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos, but a critical mistake by Jonathan Taylor prevented that from happening.

Holding onto a narrow 13-7 lead early in the third quarter, Taylor appeared to score on a 41-yard touchdown run. However, the Colts came away empty-handed after the officiating crew overturned the score.

Following an extensive review, the officials determined that Taylor had released the football before crossing the goal line into the end zone.

Because the fumble rolled out of bounds in the end zone, the play resulted in a touchback for the Broncos. Instead of the Colts extending their lead to 20-7 early in the third quarter, the Broncos gained possession at their own 20-yard line.

Taylor’s fumble was an uncharacteristic error for a seasoned running back who should know better. However, he’s not the only player to commit this type of mistake this season. In fact, he wasn’t even the only one to do so in Week 15. During the Bengals’ 37-27 victory over the Titans, Jordan Battle recovered a fumble and seemed to return it for a touchdown. But after review, the officials overturned the score, determining that Battle had fumbled the ball just before reaching the goal line.
