### Red Sox Expected to Pursue 102-mph Pitcher Roki Sasaki Aggressively

Despite acquiring a new ace to strengthen their rotation, the Boston Red Sox remain focused on enhancing their pitching staff this offseason. This commitment was underscored on December 11, when they traded four top prospects, including fourth-ranked catcher Kyle Teel, for White Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet. Crochet, 25, who boasts a striking 12.9 strikeouts per nine innings, is expected to bolster the rotation alongside Tanner Houck and Brayan Bello.

While the Red Sox ranked seventh in MLB for ERA in 2024 (3.81, fourth in the American League), their starters struggled with durability, ranking 16th in total innings pitched. This underscores their need for more reliable starting pitchers.

### Japanese Star Roki Sasaki Becomes a Key Target

On December 10, the Chiba Lotte Marines of Japan’s Pacific League “posted” 23-year-old fireballer Roki Sasaki, allowing MLB teams 45 days to negotiate a contract. Sasaki, with a career ERA of 2.41 and a remarkable WHIP of 0.833, has drawn significant attention. Known for his 102-mph fastball, he has become a top priority for teams like the Yankees, Dodgers, and Red Sox.

While the Dodgers are considered favorites due to their proximity to Japan, the Red Sox are seen as “very serious” contenders, according to MLB.com.

### Boston’s Edge: History of Success With Japanese Players

Boston’s appeal lies in its track record with Japanese players, including Daisuke Matsuzaka, Koji Uehara, and Junichi Tazawa, and its respected pitching development program. Red Sox GM Craig Breslow, who personally scouted Sasaki in Japan, adds credibility to their pitch.

Sasaki’s reported preference for a smaller market could also work in Boston’s favor, as the city ranks only 11th in MLB market size despite its prominent national profile.

The Red Sox’s pursuit of Sasaki could significantly strengthen their rotation and elevate their chances in 2025.
