Detroit Lions’ Potential Trade Package for Browns Superstar Myles Garrett

Myles Garrett, one of the NFL’s premier pass-rushers, officially requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns on Monday. Since then, speculation has been rampant about possible destinations, with the Detroit Lions emerging as a strong contender.

Garrett’s trade request isn’t entirely surprising, given that the Browns have only made the playoffs twice during his eight-year tenure. When a player of his caliber becomes available, nearly every NFL team takes notice.

Why the Lions Should Pursue Garrett

The Lions have a clear need for a dominant edge rusher to complement Aidan Hutchinson. When Hutchinson suffered a season-ending injury in 2024, Detroit’s defense struggled to generate consistent pressure. No other Lions player managed more than four sacks last season, highlighting the need for reinforcements.

With approximately $46 million in cap space, per Over the Cap, Detroit has the financial flexibility to absorb Garrett’s $20 million cap hit. However, the key question remains—what would a realistic trade package look like?

Potential Trade Compensation

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, an anonymous NFL general manager weighed in on what Cleveland might expect in return for Garrett. The executive dismissed the idea of a trade involving multiple first-round picks, calling that scenario “not happening.”

Instead, a more reasonable package could include:

  • One first-round pick and one second-round pick
  • One first-round pick and two third-round picks, plus a player

For comparison, the Chicago Bears traded for Khalil Mack in 2018, giving up:

  • Two first-round picks, a third-round pick, and a sixth-round pick
  • In exchange, they received Mack, a second-round pick, and a conditional fifth-round pick

However, a key difference is age—Mack was 27 years old at the time of his trade, while Garrett will turn 30 during the 2025 season. This could slightly reduce his trade value compared to Mack’s deal.

What’s Next?

With Garrett now on the trade block, Detroit has a prime opportunity to upgrade its defense. If the Lions can strike the right deal, pairing Garrett with Hutchinson could transform their defensive front into one of the most feared in the league.

Will the Lions pull the trigger? Stay tuned as trade talks continue to unfold.
