Sooners Secure the Deal: Three-Star Defensive Back Ryan Gilbert Nearing a Decision
May 10, 2025 | Norman, OK
The Oklahoma Sooners may be on the verge of adding another key piece to their 2025 recruiting class. Sources close to three-star defensive back Ryan Gilbert indicate the standout prospect is nearing a commitment decision—and all signs are pointing toward Norman.
Gilbert, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound defensive back from Cedar Hill High School in Texas, has seen his recruitment heat up in recent months. Known for his rangy coverage, high football IQ, and aggressive tackling, Gilbert has drawn offers from schools across the Big 12 and SEC, including Texas Tech, Arkansas, TCU, and Baylor. But it’s Oklahoma that appears to be leading the charge as decision day approaches.
“Ryan has been impressed with what Coach Brent Venables and the staff have laid out for him,” a source close to Gilbert told Sooner247. “The development track, the opportunity to compete early, and the culture around that program are big factors.”
Gilbert recently visited OU’s campus during their spring game weekend, where he reportedly spent extended time with defensive backs coach Jay Valai and several current players. He left Norman “very high” on the Sooners, calling the experience “eye-opening.”
“I loved the energy, the fans, and how the coaches broke down film with me,” Gilbert told reporters after the visit. “They see me as someone who can play multiple spots in the secondary, and that’s something I’m really interested in.”
Currently rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports and ranked among the top 75 DBs in the nation, Gilbert brings a combination of speed and physicality that has analysts projecting him as a potential riser in the recruiting rankings over the summer. His versatility allows him to line up at corner, nickel, or even safety—a trait that fits well with Oklahoma’s evolving defensive schemes.
A commitment could come as soon as this month, with insiders suggesting that Gilbert is in the final stages of his decision-making process. If Oklahoma lands him, he would be the fifth defensive back to join the Sooners’ 2025 class, bolstering a group already praised for its athleticism and upside.
For now, Sooner Nation waits—hopeful that one of Texas’ top defensive talents will be donning crimson and cream next fall.
