USC Football: Lincoln Riley Comments on Jayden Maiava, Trojans QB Battle

One of the primary narratives surrounding USC football during spring training this year revolves around the competition for the quarterback position between Miller Moss and Jayden Maiava. With Caleb Williams heading to the 2024 NFL Draft, the Trojans are seeking a new leader under center, and Moss and Maiava are the prime contenders for the QB1 spot.

While many initially favored Moss for the role, especially after his standout performance in the Holliday Bowl where he threw for 372 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception, the Trojans opted to introduce competition by recruiting former UNLV quarterback Jayden Maiava. Maiava, who earned recognition as the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year in 2023, showcased his skills with 3,085 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley shed light on the recruitment process that brought Maiava to USC, emphasizing Maiava’s commitment to competition and belief in his abilities.

Riley stated, “He visited here, and we had a positive interaction. We believed our program offered an appealing opportunity. We were clear about our criteria – we sought someone who was willing to compete and had confidence in themselves. USC is an attractive destination for quarterbacks, and ultimately, Maiava chose to be here.”

Now, Maiava is focused on asserting himself and vying for the starting quarterback position during spring practices. Riley noted Maiava’s composure and ability to grasp the team’s dynamics despite being relatively new to the program.

“He has shown impressive poise in the initial days of practice, despite being new to our system. He’s taken charge and demonstrated maturity beyond his years. It’s evident that he’s not a wide-eyed freshman; he’s experienced and understands the preparation required to excel on the field.”

The battle between Moss and Maiava for the starting role is expected to intensify throughout the spring, with a final decision likely to be made following the spring football game or the conclusion of spring practices.
