The Falcons conduct a workout with Austin Mack, a standout wide receiver from the Canadian Football League (CFL).
The Atlanta Falcons have been actively seeking talent from the north, and under Terry Fontenot’s leadership, the front office has either worked out or signed several players from the Canadian Football League (CFL). One notable success from this approach is Dee Alford, who transitioned from the CFL to become the Falcons’ current nickel cornerback and punt returner.
It appears that the Falcons are exploring this avenue once again, as they recently conducted a workout with wide receiver Austin Mack, a standout performer for the Montreal Alouettes in the previous season. Mack, 26, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent and initially joined the New York Giants in 2020, where he recorded seven receptions for 91 yards. However, he was released by the Giants after being placed on injured reserve in 2021, leading him to the CFL. In the Alouettes, Mack played a pivotal role in their championship-winning campaign, amassing 78 catches for 1,154 yards and four touchdowns.
Measuring at 6’1″ (or 6’2″, depending on the source), Mack is often praised for his size, strength, and route-running abilities in scouting reports. However, critiques point out weaknesses in his hands, blocking, and inconsistent production. With the Falcons potentially looking to sign him to the practice squad or a reserve/future contract, Mack could provide valuable competition, especially since the team currently has minimal wide receivers under contract for the upcoming year, aside from Drake London.
While it remains to be seen if the Falcons will officially bring Mack on board, their track record of exploring CFL talent suggests that he might not be the last player from the league linked to the Falcons in 2024.
