Michigan quarterback McCarthy suggests that the sign-stealing controversy has overshadowed the efforts and contributions of the players.

The quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, mentioned on Wednesday that the sign-stealing controversy hanging over Michigan’s season has eclipsed the team’s undefeated journey and its qualification for the College Football Playoff championship game in Houston on Monday. The ongoing NCAA investigation focuses on allegations that the Wolverines violated rules over three years by having a staff member engage in on-site advance scouting and using video equipment to decipher opponents’ play-call signs.

During a CFP media teleconference, McCarthy addressed the potential consequence of the NCAA instructing Michigan to forfeit wins. He expressed the unfortunate prospect of players not receiving recognition for their accomplishments. However, he emphasized that it wouldn’t diminish the team’s sense of achievement and pride, as they are aware of the hard work and commitment they’ve invested in the right way.

Coach Jim Harbaugh avoided discussing possible sanctions, emphasizing his concentration on the upcoming game against Washington. He discouraged engaging in rumors or speculations, stating that such matters are handled elsewhere.

While the NCAA doesn’t explicitly prohibit sign-stealing, rules against using electronic devices for recording opponents’ signals and in-season, in-person advanced scouting exist. Coaches are generally deemed responsible for violations occurring under their supervision. Harbaugh had a three-game suspension in the regular season due to sportsmanship policy violations, and he denied knowledge of sign-stealing activities. Michigan also suspended Harbaugh for the first three games of the season amid recruiting violation allegations.

McCarthy claimed that approximately 80% of college football teams engage in sign-stealing, characterizing it as a common practice. He noted that Michigan had to adapt to sign-stealing challenges in 2020 or 2019 when facing Ohio State. McCarthy clarified that when he mentioned “leveling the playing field,” he was referring to adjusting their own signs and distribution methods to counter potential theft.

Both McCarthy and defensive lineman Mason Graham emphasized the extensive effort their team invests in adhering to rules while analyzing opponents. They watch film meticulously, examining details like player posture, defensive alignments, and other subtle tendencies to understand opponents’ reactions in various situations. McCarthy underscored that while sign-stealing is a component, there is much more involved in their strategic analysis that often goes unnoticed due to external perceptions of sign-stealing.
