Myers’ mentor, who was the Celtics’ general manager at the time, made the offer while talking about the several bids he had gotten for Curry’s services over the years.
“You know, I never got mad at people for asking,” Myers told ESPN’s Woj Podcast. “A general manager’s (GM) task is to mine for trades.
But it was [Danny] Ainge who asked all the questions. I owe Ainge my career, so I couldn’t be angry and said to myself, “give me Curry in return” (laughs). It was humorous because everyone was aware that it was not the case.”
They won the NBA Championship the following year after Ainge pulled off a blockbuster transaction that included acquiring Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
In the administrative offices, Ainge also gave Myers his big break, which launched a partnership and career that saw Myers win two NBA Executive of the Year awards while the Warriors went on to win a quartet of rings.
Myers is currently an analyst on ESPN and an advisor to the NFL’s Washington Commanders, having left the Warriors in the summer of 2023.
Due to their poor play thus far in the season, the Warriors are currently fourth-last in the Western Conference, 11.5 wins behind the leaders, the Timberwolves. After 40 games, the Warriors have a.450 record and aren’t even in the play-in spots.
